Sealing techniques for screw conveyors

Sealing a screw conveyor is a specialized field. The correct choice must be made due to the many parameters that need to be taken into account.

When designing an appropriate seal for a screw conveyor, you must consider factors such as:

The material being conveyed
The shaft deflection angle (caused by bending of the screw shaft)
Temperature (also affects the expansion of the screw shaft)
Vibration (both from the screw conveyor and the surrounding environment)
Shaft stub diameter
Rotational speed (peripheral speed of the shaft stubs)

Shaft seals

To seal the shaft stubs of each screw shaft, shaft seals must be used. The shaft seals are placed on the end foundations of the screw. Various execution options are available for the shaft seals, depending on customer requirements and the screw’s application.

These executions include TAMAR seals, gland packings, Z-lamella seals, lip seals, and mechanical seals.

For efficient shaft sealing, it is possible to create a purge line from the housing to the side of the foundation.
